About Our Team
HISTORY AND BACKGROUND
Spoken Heroes was established on January 12, 2024, by founder Steven McCoy. A renowned journalist and Disney Alumni, Steven faced challenges stemming from Usher Syndrome, a retinal eye disease leading to blindness and hearing loss. Despite facing adversity, ableism, and discrimination, Steven persevered, ultimately making history as the world’s first Black DeafBlind journalist.
Through his journey, Steven’s experiences inspired the formation of Spoken Heroes, an organization with a mission to inspire unity, bridge the gap between abled and disabled individuals, empower the disabled community, promote inclusivity, and foster a society where everyone can unite and succeed despite their challenges.
Spoken Heroes has achieved significant milestones, including partnerships and collaborations with esteemed organizations and brands such as ROC NATION, OrCam, and the New York City Department of Social Services. These collaborations have expanded Spoken Heroes’ reach, providing access to valuable resources and furthering its mission of empowerment and inclusivity.
In addition to his work with Spoken Heroes, Steven serves as the DeafBlind Facilitator for the National Federation for the Blind of New Jersey DeafBlind Group. Through his dedication and leadership, Steven continues to make a meaningful impact within the community, exemplifying Spoken Heroes’ core values and mission.
